BIOGRAPHY OF CLINTON FEARON Clinton Fearon is counted among Jamaica's most talented musicians by peers and professionals in the Reggae music industry. His infectious bass lines, guitar licks, percussion accents and powerful vocals make Clinton Fearon a living legend among reggae musicians and fans. Clinton Fearon was born in St. Andrew, close to Kingston in Jamaica, but he grew up deep in the hills of St. Catherine. He discovered harmony one day while he was singing alone on a stone. And soon after Clinton joined the choral at the Adventist church where him and his Dad were going. He left the country side to live with his mother in Kingston when he was about 16. He found a construction work and built pieces of the roads and corners in Kingston! But music was his goal and at 17 Clinton formed his first group called The Brothers. They were looking for opportunities to play around Studio One and Treasure Isle, the two main places for musicians to make it in those times. At the end of 1969, Clinton was playing guitar in his yard when Errol Grandisson passed by and heard him. At that time The Gladiators already had their first hit with Hello Carol. They were looking for another vocalist to replace David Webber, who left shortly before. Clinton met Albert Griffiths, original founder of the group, and became the third Gladiators at the age of 19. He was a member for 18 years, playing bass, singing, working on arrangements, learning and giving as much as possible for the love of music. Clinton Fearon signed several songs for The Gladiators, hits and classics like Chatty Chatty Mouth, Richman Poorman, On The Other Side, Can You Imagine How I Feel, Let Jah Be Praised, One Love, Untrue Girl and more. Clinton was also playing in session for Coxsonne Dodd at Studio One and, for about 6 month, for Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry at Black Ark. He composed many lasting bass lines, sometimes getting credits and sometimes not, like for the hits Roast Fish And Cornbread, sang by Scratch, or Come Along by the Bells, among the few songs Clinton can remember he was on. “Scratch rarely had the proper credits for musicians and I was just happy to play so…” explains with Clinton with no regrets. So you can hear Clinton Fearon’s bass lines on albums from Yabby You, Jimmy Riley, Max Romeo, Junior Byles and many more.
Stylistics were formed in Philadelphia, PA in 1966 from two groups, The Percussions” and “The Monarchs”. When members
from each group were drafted, the remaining members, under the guidance of their English teacher Beverly Hamilton, joined
forces and changed the name to “The Stylistics”. After working locally for a few years, the group was approached by Bill Perry,
who asked if they’d be interested in recording.
Their first song, “You’re a Big Girl Now” was recorded at Virtue Recording Studio in Philadelphia. The song was written by their guitarist at the time, Robert “Doc” Douglas and Road Manager, Marty Bryant. The song was soon picked up in the tri-state area, and before long, it became a The #1 hit in Philadelphia and other cities.
Interested in promoting the record nationally, Bill Perry contacted Avco Records and made a deal. After the success of “You’re A Big Girl Now”, Avco wanted to follow up with an album release. Hit veteran producer Tom Bell was contacted and was hired to produce the group’s first album titled “The Stylistics”, and from that album came “Stop, Look, Listen to your Heart”, “You Are Everything” and “Betcha By Golly Wow”. The success of this album was phenomenal. The ball continued to roll with the release of their second album titled “Round Two”.
The Stylistics were becoming known as the Philly group with the sweet love songs.
Herbert Murrell and Airrion Love are the remaining original members of The Stylistics. Friends since junior high school, Herb
and Airrion have managed to keep their institution of 70’s music alive. It was thought to be the end of The Stylistics following
the departure of their original lead singer, but as in life, THE SHOW MUST GO ON.
Their new lead singer, Grammy Award winning recording artist, Barrington “Bo” Henderson, began his professional career with groups such as The Dramatics and Lakeside. Later in his career, Bo Henderson became lead singer of the world-renowned group, The Temptations, and was featured on their album Phoenix Rising, which went on to become almost double platinum. He was also a vocalist on the album Ear-Resistible, and helped win The Temptations a Grammy Award. The Stylistics are honored to welcome Barrington “Bo” Henderson to the group, and look forward to taking their musical journey to new heights.
The credit for the existence of The Manhattans goes to Edward “Sonny” Bivins. As an original member of the group “Manhattan,” Sonny chose to carry on that music tradition after the breakup of “Manhattan.”
The breakup came after many years of huge successes, including winning a Grammy, Gold and Platinum awards, and putting out numerous hits. The members of Manhattan collectively decided to break up to pursue their respective interests in 1989.
And that’s when Sonny decided to create The Manhattans with the help of Hektoen Music.
Sonny envisioned a fresh, new, and respectful sound that reflected the Manhattans’ roots of smooth, polished and heartfelt harmonies. To that end, he asked Al Pazant, Charles Hardy, Harsey Hemphill and Lee Williams to join him in his personal mission. They accepted.
Since then (1990), The Manhattans have performed throughout the United States and Canada consitently and frequently. They’ve appeared at special events for the United Negro College Fund; the Gulla Festival; the Martin Luther King Ambassadorial Dinner sponsored by Congress of Racial Equality (C.O.R.E.); and the Cinton Whitehouse, among many other appearances. Their performances number in the thousands.
In 2005, The Manhattans became a more permanent fixture in “The 70’s Soul Jam,” a touring production of the greatest 70’s soul bands.
In the Spring of 2005, The Manhattans were invited to perform at the World Famous Wilshire-Ebert Theater in Los Angeles CA as part of the Classic Soul Concert.
Early in 2006, The Manhattans were contracted to perform in another hit musical play, “Chicken Shack”. After which, they returned to touring.
The Manhattans currently have a new recording project on the table and continue to tour with “The 70’s Soul Jam.
This internationally-known R&B/pop duo continues to enchant audiences with hits like “We’re Still Together” 2 Hot, which went gold, “Shake Your Groove Thing” which also went gold, and of course, “Reunited” which not only reached #1 on both the Hot 100 and the Billboard R&B charts, but was nominated for a Grammy Award for Song of the Year in 1980! “I Pledge My Love,” another Peaches & Herb hit, has, by conservative estimates, been played at thousands of weddings.
They packed the house in Las Vegas just recently, and will play Washington D.C. on May 13, 2010 after several in-between engagements, delighting huge fan audiences.
Peaches & Herb’s disco hit “Shake Your Groove Thing” was featured prominently in almost too many films to mention such as An Extremely Goofy Movie, Monster, The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, Connie and Carla and Marock, as well as others.
“Shake Your Groove Thing” was featured in an Intel advertisement campaign in the late 1990s. Alvin and the Chipmunks and Drew Seeley sang in on their Undeniable album, and again on the soundtrack for Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel, this time with the Chipettes. The cast of “That 70s Show” sang “Shake Your Groove Thing” in the episode “That 70s Musical”.
In June 2009, the rock band Faith No More opened their set at Brixton Academy with their own version of “Reunited” alluding to the band’s eleven year break up and subsequent reunion. They did the same for their headlining slot at Download Festival a few weeks later.
Through many years and several Peaches reincarnations, the duo has wowed audiences worldwide since December 1966 when a St-Louis radio DJ decided to flip the single “We’re in this Thing Together,” and play its B-side instead, “Let’s Fall in Love.” It, of course, became a worldwide hit. Nine more worldwide hits later, they’re still wowing them…all over the world.

At the forefront of R&B Chicago scene in the 70’s, The Chi-Lites broke away from the gritty sound associated with the Windy City. They did so by creating their very own sound — smooth and distinct — that put Chicago on the R&B map, and brought the Chil-Lites a long string of top ten hits, gold singles, and gold albums. They got to that point by first gaining local notoriety after forming themselves from two local Chicago bands — much like the Stylistics had in Philadelphia — and going on to gain national acclaim.
It all started in the early 60’s when Marshall Thompson and Creadel Jones of The Desideros joined forces with Eugene Record, Robert Lester and Clarence Johnson of The Chantones, and formed the quintet known as The Hi-Lites. They changed their name to The Chi-Lites in 1964 to pay tribute to their hometown of Chicago.
By 1969, The Chi-Lites had released their first national hit, “Give it Away,” which climbed to No. 10 on the R&B charts. They’d made it on a national level!
They went on to achieve massive popularity in the 70’s releasing 11 top ten R&B singles during that decade — ranging from smooth ballads to socially conscious protest songs
Their first true pop hit came with (For God’s Sake) Give More Power to the People.” They followed this with the 1972 releases of “Have you Seen Her” and “Oh Girl.” Both reached No. 1 on the R&B charts, and “Oh Girl” skyrocketed to the top spot on the pop charts.
The Chi-Lites experienced a number of member changes, always followed by the release of yet more Top Ten Hits such as “Homely Girl,” “There Will Never Be Any Peace (Until God is Seated at the Conference Table),” and “Toby.”
They went on to record gold records, gold singles and an amazing 18 Top Twenty singles! The world fell in love their “Chicago Soul” sound and they became an international sensation.
Despite their many reinventions, the magic that is The Chi-Lites survived, thrived, and became known as the pioneers of the Chicago Soul sound — ultimately impacting R&B music throughout the world.
In 2000 the Chi-Lites were inducted into Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame.
The Chi-Lites were featured in the documentary, “Only The Strong Survive,” released by Miramax in 2003.
The Chi-Lites song, “Are You My Woman”, is sampled and featured by Beyoncé under the title “Crazy In Love”. The recording also features Jay-Z. The song received a Grammy award won the Hot 100 award for most weeks at No. 1.
In 2003, The Chi-Lites song, “That’s How Long I Love You,” is found on the song “Dec 4” by Jay-Z. The song made #1 on Billboard.
The Chi-Lites appear in the 2004 70’s Soul Legends concert for PBS joined by Eugene Record. Eugene, the original lead singer and composer of the greatest songs of The Chi-Lites, including “Oh Girl,” “Have You Seen Her,” and “Coldest Days of my Life” passed away at 2am on July 22, 2005 after a long bout with cancer.
Currently, The Chi-Lites tour the world to sold-out venues with “The 70’s Soul Jam.”
Yup. They still got it!
